Dementia facility - updating and repairing electrics

North West care provider

The Work

We have a longstanding relationship with a large North West based care provider. This began when their electrical condition report highlighted work which needed to be completed at one of their care homes. This building was home to 35 dementia patients. We therefore had to handle the job in a way that was sensitive to the residents and minimised disruption. The residents could not be relocated so we made the site safe. We liaised with the electricity supply company, fitted monitoring equipment and carried out temporary repairs. As a result, the care home could operate safely. Once the residents were relocated, our engineers completed the necessary electrical work and have continued to be the sole electrical contractor for this company. As a business they are required to have an electrical installation condition report every five years. Due to the requirements of the residents, we tailor how we carry out our inspections at any of their sites to their specific needs. As a result of our approach the residents continue to receive the same level of quality care in a safe environment.

Vets - loss of power in operating rooms

National chain of vets

The Work

We received an emergency call from a large veterinary practice. They had lost power to half of their site including the operating rooms. The site was a particularly large vets practice with 6 consulting rooms and 4 operating theatres. They needed power 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Their back up generator was not working properly and they had to continually manually restart the generator. This meant a delay in the treatment of animals as operations were cancelled and consultations postponed.

We arrived the same morning as the call was received and carried out testing. Our electricians found the reason for the loss of power and the emergency generator failure. The components needed to fix the issue are not readily available, so we carried out modification to the system to resume power via mains power as the generator was too unreliable.

The practice manager and company director agreed with our plan to install an automatic changeover system to provide generator power if the mains power was lost in the future. We incorporated a manual over ride so if any components in the automatic changeover system failed the manual system can be operated safely by any member of staff. As a result we ensured continued supply to all areas of the practice.

Following this incident and the positive feedback we received Bibby Contracting now carry out a weekly monitoring regime within the company. Our engineers also complete a quarterly formal test and inspection to ensure reliable supply.

For this project we used a bespoke ladder with rope access and fall arrest built in to allow high level access for our electricians to safely repair lighting within a church with a fragile floor.

High Street fashion retailer - urgent electrical safety issue

Sector

Retail

Client

Major fashion retailer in a Manchester shopping centre.

The Work

We were called out on a Saturday afternoon as there was a burning smell and loud banging noise coming from the plant room of the retailer. Our engineer attended within the hour and diagnosed the cause. Following a discussion with the shopping centre and the retailer the decision was made to isolate the power and make safe due to the level of risk to public. We carried out an emergency repair. This enabled the retailer to carry on trading safely that afternoon. We then performed further investigation when the shop was closed. We replaced the damaged components and completed the full repair without impacting the retailers' ability to trade or the shopping centre to open the following morning.

Coffee shop - urgent sign repair

High street coffee shop chain

The Work

We received an emergency call out to a coffee shop on a busy road in Manchester city centre. The metal sign above the coffee shop window had been accidently damaged by a passing lorry. No one had been injured. However, the metal sign was unsafe and posed a risk to public safety. As this was a city centre location there were a lot of pedestrians and traffic close to the coffee shop. We arrived within an hour of the call with our barriers and scaffolding. We secured the area around the loose sign and set up the scaffolding. After assessing the damage our engineer reattached the sign. As we have our own access equipment (scaffolding, scissor lifts, barriers) we are able to resolve issues such as this promptly.

Church - installation of high level lighting

Local Church

The Work

We were approached by a local Church who wanted high level level lighting to be installed and for their current lighting to be tested and updated. Access is often an issue in churches as they have high ceilings and fixed pews. Before we began our work we presented the church committee with our proposed plan. This meant they knew the timescale and we were able to work around upcoming services and Christmas events. We completed works in the church and the church hall. Using our in house aerial work platform we installed new high level lighting throughout the church. We also tested and updated the lighting in the church hall. We used our scaffolding tower for this work as the church hall also had high ceilings. We were able to complete the electrical work in the church and hall far more economically than if we needed to hire access equipment (no delays in waiting for equipment to become available and no hire fees).
